Mural Design

This style of creating is central to my artistic journey and voice. When I first began to gain recognition from friends, family, and peers in high school, I wasn’t familiar with Keith Haring’s work. Over time, I began to notice striking similarities between our styles, particularly in the way we utilize spacing, balance, and weight. I soon realized that creating pieces like this requires a certain type of eye and mindset, one that can thoughtfully engage with these elements. I became fascinated by the opportunities scale provides—how shifting from miniature to gigantic transforms the feel of a piece while preserving its subject matter. This process has become an outlet for me, offering a space to escape as I immerse myself in thought and in the work itself.

Process

Dallas Arts District

This mural, measuring 18 feet by 47 feet, stands as my largest piece to date and was completed over the course of two days. As D Magazine noted, "the scale of the mural allows the dizzying black-and-white patterns to take on a life of their own, the lines swirling and twisting and tricking the eye" (source).

Greenwich Village, New York

This mural was completed just months before the initial COVID-19 shutdown. Originally intended to remain on display for only a month, it ended up being showcased for much longer as a result of the pandemic. The piece presented its own set of challenges, as below-freezing temperatures hindered the ink’s ability to dry properly.

Private Collectors

With the support of Dallas framer Deborah Stevens, I’ve created and sold over 50 pieces in this style to private collectors. It’s incredibly special to see my work displayed on people’s walls, and even more rewarding when collectors return years later to add to their collections. This ongoing connection with my art and its audience means a great deal to me as an artist.

Outcome

This style has brought me unforgettable opportunities and connections. From painting murals in Dallas and New York to even working on the side of a shipping container that was sent to Liberia, Africa, to be used as a classroom for students, I’ve had the privilege of sharing my work with the world. While I feel a sense of accomplishment seeing my art displayed on street walls, in galleries, and in living rooms, I’m eager to continue pushing the boundaries of scale and design to explore how far I can take this creative process.
